UV flame scanners

What Is UV Flame Scanner?

UV scanner is a type of flame scanner that detects UV radiation emitted by hydrocarbon flames. Unlike IR flame scanners that detect infrared light, UV sensors are highly responsive to the distinct wavelength spectrum between 190–500 nanometers, making them suitable for detecting invisible flames and short-lived ignition failures.

These devices are widely used across industries for real-time flame monitoring to ensure process continuity and prevent catastrophic failures.

A UV flame scanner operates using the following mechanism:

  1. Detection: The scanner contains a UV-sensitive phototube that responds only to UV rays emitted by flames.

  2. Signal Processing: Upon detection, an electronic circuit amplifies the signal and sends it to a control unit.

  3. Control Integration: If no flame is detected, the system automatically shuts down the fuel supply to prevent explosions.

This rapid detection ensures operational safety, particularly in high-risk environments.

Applications of UV Flame Scanners:

UV flame scanners serve various industrial purposes, including:

  • Boiler Flame Monitoring: Essential for utility and industrial steam boilers.

  • Gas Turbines: For consistent flame detection under varying combustion conditions.

  • Furnace & Kiln Operations: Reliable detection in high-heat settings.

  • Petrochemical Facilities: Ensures safe handling of hydrocarbons.

  • Power Plants: Flame scanning improves operational efficiency.

Their high sensitivity and response speed make them ideal for low-emission or clean flame detection, where visible flame may be absent.

 UV Flame Scanner Advantages

Here’s why UV flame scanners are a smart investment:

  • Quick Detection: Immediate recognition of flame presence or absence.

  • Fail-Safe Shutdown: Prevents accidents through rapid response systems.

  • Non-Invasive Monitoring: No physical contact with the flame.

  • Lower Maintenance: Minimal moving parts reduce operational downtime.

  • Cost Savings: Reduces fuel waste and improves burner efficiency.
